John Henry was Senator Bourke B. Hickenlooper's Des Moines based secretary during his last term in the Senate (1962-1968). He also served as drillmaster for the Flying Hoofs of Iowa from 1947 until 1968. Flying Hoofs of Iowa was an amateur mounted drill-team organization formed in 1945 by the Town and Country Saddle Club of Des Moines. The organization continued until 1977. Journalist and tireless advocate for preservation of the environment, Jay N. "Ding" Darling (1876-1962) spent the majority of his career working as an editorial cartoonist for the Des Moines Register.
